The Price of a Dream

As a completely unregulated industry, the world of cosmetics is not held accountable for claims that go from half truth to exaggerated promises and outright lies.

While nobody is minding the store, the industry has prosper to the point where paying a fine for false advertising or being creative with the truth, as well as stretching scientific facts to match their interest, means less than a pinch.

As a multi billion dollars business, the cosmetic industry (including body care and all hair products as well as fragrances) outsells the food industry 2 to 1; it seems hard to believe, but is true. The skeptics should take into account that a 1.7 once of moisturizer costs more the best pound of meat at a gourmet store and  a 0.5 night cream or perfume costs twice as much as an equivalent quantity of the best caviar.

Considering this, it is not hard to believe how such anomaly has happened in our evermore hungry world driven by the unobtainable dream of eternal youth. It is the same world where hungry children are left to fend for themselves while the “fashionable” ones are turning a blind eye.

Taking full advantage of the fact that more and more people are concerned with better health and are looking for natural and organic products, the industry responded without hesitation. A multitude of products, all “natural” and half of them “organic”, have invaded the crowded market.

The Food and Drug Administration remained quite. The cosmetic industry’s advertisement campaign is running wild and people buys into the dream.

Nature is all we have; everything comes from natural sources, including poison. It does not take a genius to figure out that the intense chemical processes (that natural ingredients are subjected to in order to extract oils and other beneficial substances) will alter the molecular composition and will leave little or no nature at all in the final product.

Our constant need for reassurance that we are doing the best to preserve eternal youth and desired health will not stop the naives to happily pay the price for products that are no better than regular drugstore cosmetics.

Beauty has a price and so does ignorance.

Nice hub. What do you think of The Body Shop products? Would you advise your clients to purchase it? Thank you.

Thank you for stopping by Tina,

I have been telling my clients for as long as I can remember that excessive use of cosmetics will handicap their skin and interfere with the production of skin’s own lubricants supposed to nourish from within.

If you visit my web www.viaderma.com you will see it right there in black and white.

I also tell them whenever possible to use home made products and I teach them what to do and how to do it. I have a few hubs abut acne and I will write some more about other skin conditions and home remedies.

Do all of my clients listen? No! I have plenty of people who are not the “do it yourself” type. For them I do have products for sale.

I love homemade beauty products, because I know they are natural! It has never ceased to amaze me when I have compared the ingredients on a 'natural' product to a normal product how little, if any, difference there is.

You are very right Ivorwen,

They call the same thing by different names ex: for the "natural" products is "citric fruit extract" as oposed to ascorbic acid for regular products. No matter what they call it is still syntetic, but the "natural" sounds sooo much better and it cost sooo much more
